Google Pixel 9 and 9 Pro XL Review: The Most Ambitious Pixel Phones to Date

Since its inception, whether under the Nexus or Pixel branding, Google’s phones have catered to a niche audience. This was by design, as the focus was always on delivering the purest form of Android—uncompromised by third-party tweaks—allowing users early access to cutting-edge features. On a good day, these devices produced stellar photos, making them a favorite among tech enthusiasts.

 

But as with all things, growth and evolution are inevitable. This year’s Pixel lineup—the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL—reflects that shift. Not only is the range broader than ever, with the addition of a flashy new Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but Google also took everyone by surprise by launching the phones ahead of Apple’s iPhone 16, a departure from their usual post-Apple release strategy.
